New and horrific details have emerged about the labor camps in Xinjiang. A Kazakh woman, named Sayragul Sauytbay, escaped and recently spoke out about her experience. She stated the prisoners are forced to spend hours reciting propaganda and declaring their love for the Chinese president. When not in the classroom, they are tortured and forced to take part in medical experiments. This includes having their fingernails ripped off, being beaten, and consuming unknown medicine. Prisoners are routinely sexually assaulted by guards. China denies this, saying the camps are for reeducation and that conditions are good.

The riots in Hong Kong continue to escalate. Anger rose when a pro-democracy leader was severely injured and a teenage protester was stabbed. Protestors proceeded to throw petrol bombs at the police and set fire to shops. In addition, many adopted the Joker from the new movie as the face of the movement. Seeing similarities between the fictional government and theirs, Hong Kongers began wearing Joker masks during riots despite the face mask ban. The protests show no sign of slowing down.

On October 31, North Korea sent two short range missiles into the Sea of Japan. This is the second test this month; both were missiles that could fire from underwater and could theoretically carry nuclear weapons. This is alarming, as these could be fired from submarines, which are difficult to detect and threaten security. However, US officials reported the first missile was not fired from a submarine, but a platform or barge. Meanwhile, North Korea is still participating in denuclearization talks.

In August, India removed Kashmir’s autonomous status and sent in troops, causing unrest and increasing tensions. On October 20, a round of shelling occurred at the Line of Control in Kashmir. India and Pakistan both blame each other for starting the conflict and violating the ceasefire, which was most likely a small skirmish that escalated. India claims that Pakistan had violated the ceasefire around two thousand times this year and killed twenty one people, while Pakistan argues India killed over forty five. At least ten people, civilians and soldiers alike, have died due to the shelling on the 20th.

After the peace talks between the US and the Taliban fell through, the US increased the amount of artillery strikes in Afghanistan. On October 25, American officials successfully met with Chinese, Russian, and Pakistani representatives in Moscow. A second meeting was to take place in Beijing, but was postponed and later cancelled when President Trump discovered the Taliban killed twelve people, including an American service member. Zalmay Khalilzad, the US envoy, unsuccessfully tried to create a ceasefire between the US and the Taliban. Fighting in Afghanistan is only increasing.
