Continent Update - North America

November 20, 2019 | Written By - Caitlin Ludwig '23

On Saturday, October 26, 2019, The United States military raided and evacuated a compound in Syria in which ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was residing. After two hours on the ground, Baghdadi was killed. 2020 Democrats refrain from crediting United States President, Donald Trump, and now questions arise as to how this mission will further affect his presidential campaign and impeachment process. President Trump’s victory speech has been compared with President Obama’s speech from Osama Bin Laden’s death, but many Democrats disliked Trump’s speech. Polls show that some Republicans who were originally for impeaching Trump have changed their views. A vote to formalize the impeachment proceedings passed on party lines, with no House Republicans voting in favor of the resolution.

During October 24-26, 2019, a mass grave was discovered south of the Arizona border in a resort Mexican town called Puerto Penasco. The grave was discovered by a group known as the Madres Buscadoras de Sonora: a group of mothers who investigate burial sites in an attempt to bring the dead back to their families. So far, forty-two bodies have been found, two of which are still decomposing. Most other remains are in skeleton form. Tests are still being conducted, but drug traffickers and kidnapping gangs are known to bury their victims in mass graves such as this one.

On November 4, 2019, three mothers and six children were killed in an attack by drug cartel members in Mexico. La Mora is a town that is patrolled by drug cartels, so families of the Mormon faith often travel together for their safety. Three mothers and their children were driving in their separate cars when their vehicles were shot with bullets, eventually leading the cars to catch on fire. The drivers and six children were killed, while several other kids were injured. It is unclear which cartel is responsible for this attack and a suspect who was not involved has been released.

Tarania Clarke, a 20-year-old midfielder for the Jamaica women’s national soccer team, was killed after a fight erupted with another woman over the phone. Clarke recently made her “senior international debut for the Reggae Girlz” during an Olympic qualifying match against Cuba. Specific details of the fight have not yet been released to the public. It is known that Clarke got into a phone fight on Thursday, October 31, and was stabbed and killed. A woman has been taken into Jamaican custody for this murder. The Jamaican Football Federation president, Michael Ricketts, extends his condolences to Clarke’s family and friends.
