In Favor of Gun Rights

October 15th, 2017

The argument in favor of gun rights is simple: Guns are objects. No object is intrinsically good or evil - that is determined by who uses them and how. If you say guns have killed many people, the retort is that, annually, swimming pools claim more lives. But we are not talking about background checks to build a pool. After the Boston Marathon bombing, there was no calling for the maximum age to buy a pressure cooker to be raised. Guns are objects, and while they have been used to end innocent lives, they have other, less deadly, uses. High schools used to have rifling teams that encouraged school spirit and dignity. Rifles are used around the country for game hunting, a practice virtually identical to fishing except that no one is calling for fishing rods to be outlawed. In short, the argument for gun rights is that, in the right hands, guns are nothing more than recreation and a simple, sure to protect yourself. No one is calling for fully automatic sub-machine guns or silencers to become available to civilians. Rather than locking all firearms away, a more effective solution would be to increase education about the proper usage and safety of guns. This education could be in tandem with mental health education, teaching people how to get help before they resort to abusing a tool. That is all a gun is: a tool that, with proper safety protocol, is not all that different from the katanas dweebs use.
